After the tryout I sat down with friends to find out if this was something we really wanted or if it was just a urge brought on by talk among the friends at college. Determining if this was truly our goal was critical because shaving 30 seconds off our time represented a 25% improvement. And that kind of improvement would require real commitment and dedication to the cause. To make matters more challenging, the next and final tryout would be a year later - leaving little time to produce fantastic results.
Determine What You Want: Before start on the 7 Steps to Success you must know at what you want to succeed. You must have determined in very specific terms what success looks like, feels like, tastes like and smells like. There can be no uncertainty.
The most successful people their work differently than most
Carolina: My case success means being able to live and achieve our dreams.
Mohan: Success means independence and happiness.
Step 1: Believe You WILL Be Successful: Over the course of our adult life we have spent a considerable amount of time reading academic journals, books, articles and watching videos about human potential. In nearly 100% of the content is the conclusion that goals are difficult-to-impossible to achieve if you do not have an internal belief that you can do it. Study after study has been conducted on the power of positive affirmation. If you can't look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself genuinely that you can do it then most likely, no matter how much effort and training you put into it, you will have a difficult time reaching your goal. You must believe in yourself!
Step 3: Change Failing Habits: The toughest part of creating a Success Plan is the need to look at ourselves objectively. We many times have problems admitting that our approaches are flawed and not working. Success requires changing what does not work into what does work.
Step 4: Imitate Successful Habits in Others: While each Success Plan should be customized to who we are it does not mean that we must reinvent the wheel every time. Certain habits may apply regardless of the individual. It is important to analyze others that have had the success we seek and imitate the habits that are consistent with who we are.
Step 5: Refuse To Be Average: Every one wants to be a Something. But it requires not only meeting the time requirement but also the completion of a hard work on their goal. Achievement and success does not go to the average. It goes to the above average. If you are happy with the status then you have no reason to rubbish and moan. it is the truth. Demand more from yourself.
Step 6: Work Your Butt Off: My research into human potential has resulted in reading a great number of biographies on successful historical figures. Good enough can never be good enough. Success requires a continuous effort because success is like time - it's here and then it's gone. Those individuals that have led successful lives are those that have continuously tended to their goals. You may not be able to take a step forward every day. But keep your feet moving. Forward, backward, sideways. It does not matter. Just keep moving and keep working toward your goal.
Step 7: Learn From Your Failures: "Fail Often. Fail Fast. Fail Forward." With all this talk about success and Success Plans it may be difficult to believe that we learn very little from success. It is our failures that provide us with the greatest feedback and lessons. A life free of failure is a life free of success. I truly believe that. As you move forward with your Success Plan be sure to carefully analyze the failures along the way to ensure that you learn the most from the experience. Next time the situation comes around you'll identify it, respond differently and succeed.
